About Clayton
Clayton is part of what used to be the U.S. Panama Canal Zone, and it was formerly home to a major American military installation known as Fort Clayton. For decades, this area served as a strategic base connected to Canal operations and U.S. presence in Panama, until the base was closed and the land was transferred to Panama as part of the Canal treaties (the final handover happened in 1999). Today, many of the same buildings and tree-lined streets remain, but the purpose has completely transformed—much of the former base became “Ciudad del Saber” (City of Knowledge), a campus of education, innovation, and international organizations.
